Watermelon Mocktail
A mocktail can best be described as a cocktail without the liquor, using juices, sodas, infused waters and many other non-alcoholic ingredients to provide flavor. Generally, a mocktail is made fresh at a restaurant’s bar, as opposed to a soda or other drink that is ready as soon as it’s poured from the fountain or container – although exceptions can easily arise. Modern mocktails tend to have a sense of sophistication that’s shared with their alcoholic counterparts and use a variety of ingredients to cover a spectrum of flavors.
Watermelon is a delicious and refreshing fruit that’s also good for you.
It contains only 46 calories per cup but is high in vitamin C, vitamin A and many healthy plant compounds.
Ingredients
Watermelon Fizz Mocktail
~2.5 lbs seedless watermelon (1/2 of a mini “personal” watermelon)
1 lime
1 cup mint leaves, loosely packed (plus extra for garnish)
generous splash of kombucha or sparkling water (experiment with flavors!)
For Serving
crushed ice
watermelon slices for garnish
mint sprigs and/or edible flowers for garnish
How to make
Centrifugal Juicer Method
1) Cut the watermelon into medium-sized pieces (carefully removing the rind). Cut the peel away from the lime.
2) Add about half of the watermelon to the juicer*, then the mint, followed by the lime and the rest of the watermelon (collecting the juice in a pitcher). Set the watermelon juice aside. (If you wish to strain any remaining pulp, use a fine mesh sieve to do so before pouring your watermelon juice into glasses.)
3) Add crushed ice to your glasses. Pour 2-4 ounces of watermelon juice in each glass. Top with kombucha or sparkling water. Garnish as desired and serve. Cheers!
Blender Method
1) Cut the watermelon into medium-sized pieces (carefully removing the rind). Add the watermelon pieces and mint leaves to a powerful, high-speed blender. Whirl away for about a minute or so, or until watermelon is completely smooth and juicy. Strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher to remove any undesired pulp and/or mint leaves.
2) Roll the lime against the countertop a few times (to help prime it for juicing) and then cut it in half. Use a wooden reamer, citrus squeezer, hand juicer (or your hands), to squeeze lime juice into the pitcher. Give the watermelon juice a stir with a large wooden spoon or spatula.
3) Add crushed ice to your glasses. Pour 2-4 ounces of watermelon juice in each glass. Top with kombucha or sparkling water. Garnish as desired and serve. Cheers!
